Kempen soil

Beneath your feet lies a typical Kempen soil: poor and sandy beneath the surface. But did you know that this soil is ideal for creating poor, flower-rich grasslands? Sheep's-bit, mouse-ear hawkweed, cat's-ear, St John's wort and harebell are just some of the species that have been sown in various locations and are thriving here perfectly.

These plants will attract an abundance of butterflies, bees, bumblebees and hoverflies to SCK CEN's grounds. Which butterflies can you spot? Perhaps the rare grayling, a target species that we want to provide space for at SCK CEN through careful design and management.
