Restoring valuable nature
A journey back in time... About 250 years ago, you would have looked out over a vast heathland at this exact spot. A purple sea of plants stretched as far as the eye could see, with a few trees and shrubs here and there on the horizon. The beautiful purple flowers that graced your view came from heather, a dominant plant species in the Mol dry heath vegetation. The heather is invaluable to a variety of butterflies and acts as an important nectar source for bees and other insects.
SCK CEN has set itself the goal to bring this valuable nature back to its sites. That is why some sections have been planted and seeded with heather. With careful management in the future, these areas will become a true hotspot for a variety of butterflies and other insects.
