Overzicht

A school on "Neutron Resonance Analysis" will be organized by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in collaboration with the SCK CEN Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology. The school will be held at the premises of the JRC Geel from May 13-17, 2024. The school concentrates on the production of evaluated nuclear data or neutron interactions in the resonance region. A maximum of 25 selected participants is foreseen.

If eligible, applicants can apply for an ENEN2plus mobility grant. The grant will be 1250 euro to cover travel and accommodation expenses and the registration fee of 350 euro.
To apply for the grant, please submit your application file, detailing the following information:

  • contact details of the student;
  • status of the PhD study for PhD students or early career professionals;
  • motivation to attend the school;
  • scientific CV and publication list;
  • description of the present research work.

The application should be sent by e-mail to JRC-G [dot] II [dot] 5-SECRETARIAT [at] ec [dot] europa [dot] eu (JRC-G[dot]II[dot]5-SECRETARIAT[at]ec[dot]europa[dot]eu) / academy [at] sckcen [dot] be (academy[at]sckcen[dot]be) before the deadline of February 15, 2024.

All selected participants will be requested to comply with the schedule below:

  • Deadline for submission of the application: February 15, 2024;
  • Information to the applicants about the decision of the selection committee: February 28, 2024;
  • Confirmation of participation to the applicants: March 15, 2024;
  • Final registration: March 31, 2024.

Remark - Date February 20, 2024 - It is still possible to register for the NRAS school but it is no longer possible to apply for the ENEN2plus mobility grant.
Maximum number of grants were distributed.

Objective

The school intends to discuss the procedures to produce evaluated cross section data for neutron interactions with material in both the resolved and unresolved resonance region. Presentations will cover the basic principles of the production of experimental and evaluated data.

The objective is to set up a bridge between Master students, PhD students and early career professionals, and professionals specialized in the field.

Selection and Steering committee

The members of the selection and Steering Committee are:

  • Gert Van den Eynde (SCK CEN, Belgium) | Chair
  • Alexey Stankovskiy (SCK CEN, Belgium)
  • Peter Schillebeeckx (EC-JRC Geel)
  • Stefan Kopecky (EC-JRC Geel)

Onderwerpen

General programme

The school consists of different sessions with lectures by dedicated specialists in the field, complemented by hands-on sessions to practice the production and use of evaluated nuclear data.

The specialised sessions are divided up in five parts:

  • Production of experimental cross section data in the resonance region;
  • Nuclear data evaluation methods in the resolved and unresolved resonance region;
  • Status of evaluated nuclear data libraries;
  • Uncertainty evaluation and propagation;
  • Presentation by course participants.

Doelpubliek

Applicants should be either Master students, PhD students or early career professionals, who completed their studies after August 1, 2020.

Voorkennis

A basic knowledge of nuclear physics is required.

Preparation

The school will include a session to allow the course participants to orally present their work in 10 minutes.

Please send your oral contribution to academy [at] sckcen [dot] be before May 1, 2024.
