Internship- Acquiring radiological data using UAVs

Over the past decade, SCK CEN has developed extensive experience in performing radiological measurements using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This expertise supports our role in assisting authorities within the framework of the Belgian nuclear and radiological emergency plan. More recently, we have aimed to contribute to the remediation of historically contaminated sites, where UAVs play a crucial role in site characterization.

Our work involves selecting, designing, and optimizing detector payloads, flying various drones, and collaborating with other drone operators. We continuously strive to improve our UAV measurements and optimize our equipment and missions based on the specific radiological challenges at hand. This process requires coupling and testing radiological payloads on drones, creating necessary interfaces for data collection and integration, and developing methodologies for data analysis and visualization.

During the internship, the student can assist in several of these tasks, specifically for upcoming flights aimed at investigating sites with NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) residues, which have elevated levels due to industrial processes. The tasks include:

  1. Coupling selected equipment to the UAV, and developing and testing data collection and exchange mechanisms.
  2. Contributing to the setup of effective flight plans and exploring specific tools for this purpose.
  3. Assisting in data acquisition and analysis by testing various processing methodologies.
