Definition & management of the System Engineering Approach for the SMR Requirements and Design

Together with a robust international consortium SCK CEN want to build a Belgian demonstration model of the very first lead-cooled Small Modular Reactor. Systems engineering has been chosen as a paradigm to manage the multi-faceted complexity of such an endeavor across the various stages of the reactor lifecycle. Tools are being used to create and maintain a knowledge base of design assets, as well as to facilitate the creation of up-to-date documents; still, discrepancies can exist between the knowledge base and the system design models, only the latter of which timely capture the current envisaged design.

This project aims to prototype an approach to create a robust link between system design models, with the aim to timely detect models conflicts; lessen the document-centric management of lifecycle milestones; and semi-automatically update the knowledge base.

Such a robust link shall take the shape of a service managing and distributing to a set of authorized clients a stream of live data extracted from system models. A web-based application shall be designed and implemented. A data flow between systems parameters and modeling engines shall be defined so as to provide a detailed description of the activities associated with changes, as well as with a qualitative idea of the costs and performance penalties associated with changes.

The major components of the intended service are shown in the following picture:

Clients (for instance browsers, modeling, and simulation systems) shall transparently communicate with a server side via HTTP. The server side shall run on a virtual machine running an HTTP daemon and interfacing a PostgreSQL database of system parameters.

The ideal candidate for this position should be familiar with web-based client-server applications, DBMS systems, and programming in Python.
