Reactor BR1 (Belgian Reactor 1) has been in operation since 1956 as the first research reactor in Belgium. This air-cooled graphite reactor runs on natural uranium and is extremely flexible. Examples of frequent use are the calibration of measurement instruments, radiation tests on materials and training for nuclear experts.
On request only
Since the advent of reactor BR2, BR1 has no longer been in continuous operation; only on internal or external request. BR1 is still running on the original uranium fuel.
After all these years the reactor has so far used barely 1% of its fuel. As a result we can utilise it for many years to come. The operating costs are very limited and hence the future of BR1 is secure.
