On Wednesday, 16 March, the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK•CEN) has scheduled an exercise for the measuring teams of the Federal Measuring Cell around the SCK•CEN business site in Mol.
The Measuring Cell is a team under the management of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) that carries out radiological measurements. The team consists of experts from Civil Protection, Defence, SCK•CEN, the Institute for Radio Elements (IRE), and the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC).
The exercise is part of the testing procedure of the Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Plan for the territory of Belgium, and is intended to train the members of the Measuring Cell and to practise the procedures. The use of personal protective equipment will be practised in particular on this day, as well as the set-up of a base camp (in Kasterlee), radio communication, and the implementation of measurements.
It is therefore possible that members of the Measuring Cell may be seen in radiological protection equipment in the municipalities of Mol, Dessel and Kasterlee on 16 March. It is also possible that the civil protection unit will deploy a drone at specific sites in the context of this exercise.
